Smooth Projects... Effective Project Management! Project Manager SoftwareBuilding a Great Project TeamIt is true that whom you work with affects the overall quality of a project. Indeed, the best resource a project manager can have is not a fancy project management software program, but rather it is a good team staffed with competent members who are reliable and willing to get the job done. The team does not have to work perfectly together, but when you have good, reliable people who can be counted on to do their parts, the project is much more likely to succeed in a way that can even be considered exceptional. When choosing members of a project team, the project manager should take some time to review past performances of various possible team members, as well as get a feel for the expertise each member would bring to the project. Knowing the skill sets of possible project workers can help project management efficiency by ensuring that there is not unnecessary repetition of duties. Additionally, it can help the project manager understand exactly where each person should be utilized. Knowing which duties would be best for each team member is very important. Just having good people is not as effective as matching good people with the right tasks. If you are unsure, it does not hurt to briefly speak with potential team members to get a feel for how they work and where their strongest knowledge lies. Likewise, knowing which people would not be good in a certain position or with certain assignments is helpful. This way you can avoid taking valuable project time to train someone who is not familiar with the work. Choosing consummate professionals is also a good choose. Professionals know how to address problems in a non-personal and constructive way. Additionally, they are prepared to work effectively with people they might not necessarily like for the good of the project. Professionals will not gossip about other project members, and they respect the authority of the project manager without being afraid to voice their ideas and opinions in a polite manner when they feel the need to. Reviewing performance is also important. Find out if the potential members are habitually late to work, or miss deadlines. A pattern of tardiness will not be cured just because a team member works on a certain project. Likewise, the best project management in the world will not encourage someone who has developed a habit of mediocre performance and a slight tendency to laziness to suddenly reform. Know that the people you recruit for a project are solid workers, and take pride in doing a good job on time. It is not always possible for a project manager to choose his or her own team. When this happens, good project management practices can encourage the team to become a cohesive unit. By promoting an open and professional environment, as well as letting your team know that you expect good work and have high standards, will help you instill a sense of community, and hopefully encourage a feeling of ownership in the project.
