Creating Management Goals

In project management, as in other areas of life, the creation of goals is very important. After all, goals give us something to strive for and allow us to build confidence in our abilities to accomplish tasks and complete assignments. When one is a project manager, it is important to have goals in order to provide direction and encourage improved performance. It also provides measurable success. You can make a report and cite goals attained to show progress and you can track the success of a program or project by the goals reached, and by new goals set. Management goals fall into two categories: goals for the project and goals for personal management style.

Goals for the project. These are goals that every project manager knows are necessary to move the project along. As each goal is reached, another stage of the project is complete, until the ultimate goal, the successful completion of the project, is reached. These goals are set according to what needs to be done. Project objectives provide guidance, and goals help the project manager guide his or her team to achieving the objectives. The goals are chosen by virtue of what needs to be done, and what tasks need to be accomplished in order to finish the project.

Project management goals. The project manager may set goals in general for the improvement of her or his management style. These may include overcoming personal weaknesses and management defects. Some managers may wish to be more organized while others may strive to listen better and develop better communication skills. The important thing to remember is that as the project manager sets and achieves goals to be a better manager, the team’s over all performance improves as well, and the project goals are more likely to be met.

When creating management goals, whether they be for the project or for personal improvement, one must first recognize that there is room for improvement, and that certain things need to be accomplished in order to effect those improvements. Goals should be based on what you want or need to get done. Additionally, they should be attainable. They should also be fairly small in scope. A huge goal can be discouraging, as it is difficult visualize a large goal’s accomplishment. It can be overwhelming to even begin tackling a large and complicated goal. Small goals that can be attained in a reasonable amount of time are best.

This does not mean that goals should not be challenging. It is possible to have small but challenging goals. The challenge is what helps team members and project management grow and improve. Stretching oneself is a vital part of growing as a team member or as a project manager. But make sure that the management goals you set are not impossible. Accomplishing a difficult task and reaching a hard goal inspires confidence to continue trying new things. Constantly failing because goals are not attainable only breeds poor morale.

Project management software made to help create goal plans and track progress can help in the creation and attainment of management goals. But no matter how you do it, setting goals is a great way to feel good about getting things done.
